WICOMICO PUBLIC LIBRARIES KICKS OFF SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Wicomico Public Libraries is excited to announce its Summer Reading Program for 2017. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” The Summer Reading Program kicks off on Wednesday, June 28, 10:30 a.m. at the Downtown Library with an interactive musical performance by Uncle Pete.
Adults, children and teens can participate in the Summer Reading program. Summer Reading participants this year will be able to sign-up for the program, track their progress and achievements all online through Beanstack by visiting wicomicolibrary.beanstack.org. Through Beanstack participants will receive weekly book recommendations tailored to age, reading level, and reading interests via email. As activities and challenges are completed participants can stop by their local Wicomico Public Libraries branch, pick up their prizes and attend the many free performances and programs that will be held from June 28 through August 9. This year’s grand prize is a 529 College Savings Plan valued at $250. Pre-readers will have a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition and elementary age kids and teens are eligible to win a Kindle Fire HD. Adults also have the opportunity to win one of three Kindle Fires and various other gift cards.
Summer Reading offers fun, educational programs and reading activities to help kids avoid the “summer slide” - which results in losing ground on what they learned over the school year. Studies show that by the fifth grade, children can lose 2 to 3 years of educational progress, due simply to a lack of exposure to reading and educational opportunities over the summer months. It is the Library’s goal to encourage students to continue reading throughout the summer and foster a love for reading that positively affects their academic success.
